Album Review: Eels "End Times"

(Shopping)

By Emma Laidler

The tenth studio album from Eels aka Mark E Everett is a viseral piece of work. It begins, aptly, at 'The Beginning', a sombre track centering around picked arpeggios and Everett's quivering vocal, reminiscing about 'when everything was beautiful and free...There was nothing else, just me and my girl'.

From then on the album moves onto describing the loss of that love, including the outstanding piano track 'A Line In The Dirt'.

Although there are a few more upbeat, bluesy tracks such as 'Gone Man' and 'Unhinged' the album mainly revolves around what E does best, beautiful melancholy ballads. An album best listened to in solitude that will leave you pensive to say the least. A monumental work.
