Album Review: Charlotte Gainsbourg "IRM"

(Shopping)

By Emma Laidler

Charlotte Gainsbourg's latest album IRM was written, produced and mixed by American singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Beck Hansen and it certainly has his stamp on. His echoey, haunting sound is all over the record and perfectly compliments Gainsbourg's sweet, emotive vocal melodies.

There is also a noticeable industrial, mechanical sound running through the album, especially on the title track IRM. Considering IRM is the french equivalent of MRI, this sound is most likely due to the frequent scans the singer had to endure following a brain haemorrhage in 2007. 'Take a picture, whats inside? Ghost image in my mind...Leave my head demagnetized, tell me where the trauma lies.'
