Autumn And Springtime

By Elizabeth Hayden-Jones

AUTUMN

Bold bright shadows cast by deep rich rays
The sun now streams low in my window each new day.

I gaze at the garden, a place now forsaken
Enchanting memories of fine sunny days.

The flowers resplendent, now withered and jaded,
And trees once bedecked, now lonely in Autumn they fade.

Now I awaken to cherish the Autumn
A time for harvest, cosy evenings and fireside sagas,

A time now to ponder the year how its flown
And of England, its glory, the seasons, and the next one to come

Autumn’s velvet colours, long shadows, bright days,
Will soon give way to that chill winter haze

For now I enjoy each new day as it dawns
Before the long haul of winter in its silent guise hastens

Soon, at year end I shall cherish
The sunshine, the freedom, long happy days remembered.

All this, I fondly recall in that long window gaze!

SPRINGTIME

Through the long winter days I linger
yet knowing Spring will arrive,

Days now awaken to a promise,
and new life bursts forth with surprise.

I eagerly search the garden, another bud appears!
The snowdrops, the crocus, the leaves that gently unfurl.

Great joy as I muse on new life,
sunshine, birdsong, warmth.

And a promise of good things to come.
I watch and wait, now patiently.

I know that Spring will arrive,
For each flower that opens, the gloom of winter ceases

With excitement, and pleasure, I ponder ahead,
For Spring, yes Spring, has truly arrived!

(Dedicated to Amy Victoria 3/3/97)
