Here at Worcester Women we have been battling the snow and elements all week while the city is in the grip of one of the coldest winters on record. Temperatures plummeted to a freezing -15 last night and according to one or two news reports the North Pole is only a few degrees lower.
We’ve devised ten top tips to help keep you warm and safe in the current cold snap:
1. Wear gloves and a hat to keep you warm and protect you from the chill and frost. Gloves that are lined in the inside are very useful to keep frostbite at bay.
2. Wear hiking boots, steel toe cap boots or industrial safety boots – these are comfortable, keep your feet warm and have a firm grip due to their chunky sole.
3. Buy a pair of wellington boots – these are comfortable and with a good gripping sole are just what you need in the snow.
4. Wear woollen socks – these will help keep your feet warm and protected from the chill and frost.
5. Beware of wearing training, because unless they have firm grips underneath them you can slip and slide in them very easily. Some also have small holes for ventilation so your feet could get wet inside them.
6. Wear several layers of clothing – if you can invest in some good thermal underwear and
vests these will be invaluable.
7. Watch your step – walk carefully in the snow especially if your shoes are smooth underneath as you will be more likely to slip or fall.
8. Hold on to railings or rails if available – when out walking in the snow, if there is anything to hold on to such as railings or stair rails, hold on to them to make sure you don’t fall down.
9. Please heed official advice about not driving or travelling in adverse weather conditions. But if you absolutely have to travel, ensure that the car is fully stocked with items such as blankets, a torch, water, a spade and take a hot thermos of coffee/tea with you, as you never know if you will be stranded away from any service areas. Make sure the car is in good working order before embarking on your journey.
10. If you live near any elderly or vulnerable people, please check on them and ensure they are warm enough and have enough supplies. There is nothing like a cold snap to bring out the community spirit in people!
